What are SmartCards?
CSCS SmartCards contain a microchip that can store information or be used as a “key” to access information stored on databases. CSCS introduced them in 2010 to bring additional benefits to cardholders and their employers including:
Making them much harder to forge than plain printed cards.
We had been alerted that increasing numbers of counterfeit CSCS cards were in circulation, could give incompetent workers access to construction sites and potentially put health and safety at risk.
Simple validation of the card holder’s details.
The information on SmartCards can be checked quickly and easily using an inexpensive card reader to validate whether the person showing the card has the appropriate competence to be allowed to work on site.
Using CSCS cards for additional applications.
Virtually any information that can be stored electronically can be retrieved using a SmartCard. The information can either be stored on the card’s chip or can be held on contractors’ or clients’ databases and the SmartCard used as a “key” to access it. This could include, for example, training or occupational health records, costing data, project management information or links with access control systems.
