- Other than my trade or occupation can I have other qualifications printed on my CSCS card?
-
Qualifications that can be printed on a CSCS card are:
- City & Guilds Craft Certificate
- City & Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate
- SCOTVEC Advanced Craft Certificate
- Winter Maintenance Qualified (for Highway Maintenance Operatives)
- Indentured Apprenticeship (where this is not the main Route of Entry)
- CAS (Construction Apprenticeship Scheme)
To add these qualifications to a card, copies of certificates must be sent to CSCS. If they are included with the initial applications there is no additional charge. If a request is made for them to be added after a card has been issued an additional £36.00 must be paid for a new card.
- Do FAS/SOLAS Safepass cardholders need to take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test to apply for a CSCS Card?
-
FÀS/SOLAS Safepass cardholders are exempt from having to take the Operatives level of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test when applying for a CSCS card. This is providing the Safepass has been achieved in the last two years.
FÀS/SOLAS Safepass cardholders are not exempt from having to take the Manager and Professionals level of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
- How does the card application process differ between an Employers Apprenticeship and an Approved Appenticeship?
-
There are two routes to obtain a CSCS Card through an apprenticeship.
Employers Apprenticeship (Blue & Gold Card)
The card applicant will need to provide a copy of their final completion certificate from the employer with whom they completed the apprenticeship with details of when it was completed. They will also need to provide copies of their Individual’s City & Guilds (Craft or Advanced) Certificates. The applicant will then be issued with a blue CSCS Card if they have the Employers Apprenticeship and Craft City & Guilds. A gold CSCS Card will be issued if they provide copies of Advanced Craft City & Guilds Certificates with the Apprenticeship Papers.
Approved Apprenticeship (Gold Card)
The card applicant will need to provide copies of their fully Indentured Apprenticeship papers gained through the apprenticeship provider eg NJCBI. Different providers will have different types of certificates for their apprenticeship.
If the card applicant can provide copies of City & Guilds Certificates with this as well, this will be included on the reverse of the card.
If the card applicant does not have their apprenticeship documents find out more about the appeals process here.
- How much does it cost to take the CITB health safety and environment test?
-
The cost of the test is £22.50.
- I’m not qualified, what do I need to do?
-
The qualification you need to achieve will depend what job you do on a construction site. Check the requirements here
- How much does it cost to get qualified?
-
We are aware the cost of training to obtain a qualification can be an issue for many people seeking to enter the industry, or already employed and wishing to upskill.
The cost of training is determined by the numerous training companies delivering training and will vary depending on who is delivering the training and where in the UK the course is delivered.
There is a wide range of financial support available to both employees and the self-employed seeking to achieve qualifications within the UK construction industry. Below are some of the funding options for you to consider.

- Why is CSCS stopping accepting new Profiled Route applications?
-
Profiled Route was introduced in 2011 and was intended for construction site managers or supervisors who have on site experience but do not hold a nationally recognised qualification in construction. Applicants are only required to submit evidence of their experience for independent review to qualify for a card.
The construction industry has since told CSCS that it wants to qualify the workforce. This means clients, employers and contractors want construction workers to achieve a nationally recognised qualification for the occupation they are working in.
Profiled Route does not support industry’s desire for a qualified workforce – it tells your employer you do not hold a nationally recognised construction related qualification.
On this basis Profiled Route is no longer fit for purpose. CSCS has consulted with industry to determine the best way to address this issue. From 1st April 2016 CSCS will stop accepting new applications for Profiled Route.
The introduction of these new measures is a practical approach to industry’s desire for a fully qualified workforce.
- I have years of experience why do I need a qualification to prove that I’m a skilled site manager or supervisor?
-
While experience is important, the construction industry’s aim is to improve standards and safety on UK construction sites. This is why clients, employers and contractors want construction workers to achieve a nationally recognised qualification for the occupation they are working in.
Employers are increasingly using CSCS cards as a means to check that workers on their sites have the correct qualifications for the job they are doing. Profiled Route tells your employer you do not hold a nationally recognised construction related qualification.
You are required to obtain a Construction related NVQ/SVQ levels 4, 5, 6 or 7 in the relevant construction management level qualification.
The qualification you need to achieve will depend what job you do on a construction site. Check the requirements using the CSCS Card Finder.
- I already have a CSCS card obtained through the Profiled Route, am I affected by this decision?
-
Existing cards issued under Profiled Route will remain valid and can be renewed as normal provided applicants renew their cards in line with CSCS scheme requirements.
- My current card does not have a CSCS logo, will I still be able to get onto site with it?
-
The CLC has asked industry, including trade associations, contractors, clients and government to specify and promote card schemes carrying the CSCS logo with no equivalents accepted. It is our understanding that the vast majority of principle contractors and homebuilders intend to adhere to the CLC strategy.
Many industry card schemes are already engaging with CSCS and we believe most others are developing plans to meet the CLC’s requirements to qualify for the CSCS logo.
Several card schemes are in the process of applying for the CSCS logo and we hope to be making further announcements as more schemes meet the CLC requirements and sign agreements with CSCS.
If your card scheme has not already engaged with CSCS to discuss displaying the CSCS logo, we would encourage you to ask a representative from your card scheme to contact CSCS to discuss the CLC’s requirements and what they need to do to meet them.
- I don’t have an NVQ, does that mean I will have to get qualified?
-
It depends on the type of card you have:
- CSO – CSCS no longer issues these cards. There is information here about what you need to do when this card expire.
- CRO – CSCS will stop issuing Construction Related Occupation (CRO) cards in April 2017. All CRO cards issued from 1st October 2015 will expire on 30th September 2017 and are not renewable. You will be expected to register for a nationally recognised construction related qualification before the card expires. Read more about the CRO card changes.
- IA – From 1st January 2020, all cards renewed under Industry Accreditation will expire on 31st December 2024 and CSCS will stop issuing the card from 30th June 2024. Read more about the IA withdrawal.
- Profiled Route – CSCS stopped accepting applications via the Profiled Route in April 2016 but cards already obtained this way are renewable. Read more about the Profiled Route changes.
- AQP, PQP – These cards will continue to be renewable.
- Site Visitor – All Construction Site Visitor cards issued from 3rd September 2018 will expire on 31st August 2020 and are non-renewable. CSCS will stop issuing the card from 28th February 2020. Read more about the Visitor card withdrawal.
- What do card scheme operators have to do to comply?
-
They will need to meet the requirements set out by the CLC.
In early 2015 CSCS completed an internal audit of the scheme against the CLC’s requirements. The results of this audit may be useful to other scheme operators to help them to determine what actions they need to take to ensure their scheme is compliant with the CLC’s stipulations.
- When do card scheme operators have to meet the requirements?
-
The CLC action states “A transition process to bring all existing cardholders up to the minimum standard by 2020 will be agreed and implemented”. So if plans are not in place by 2020 a card scheme will be prevented from displaying the logo.
- Will card scheme operators incur costs for becoming CSCS logoed?
-
CSCS will not charge for auditing schemes against the CLC criteria or supplying the logo. There may be extra charges from card producers for adding the logo which card schemes would need to consider.
- I expect to obtain Professional Membership during the five year life span of my new Trainee card. However, the membership could take more than five years to achieve. Will I be able to renew the Trainee card?
-
The rules state the card is non renewable. However, CSCS does not wish to prevent cardholders from achieving their professional membership. In this scenario it is likely CSCS will consider a renewal if the cardholder can submit evidence of their professional membership achievement timeline.
- What happens if I have registered for but not completed my qualification by the time the new Trainee Card expires?
-
Applicants must complete their qualification before the Trainee card expires so that you can move onto the appropriate skilled card for your occupation. If you do not complete your qualification by the time the Trainee Card expires you will be unable to obtain any other CSCS card.
- Do I need to pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment Test to obtain the new Trainee Card?
-
Yes, all applicants must complete the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test up to 2 years prior to applying for their Trainee Card. The operatives level test is the minimum requirement but CSCS will also accept a number of the specialist tests. Visit CITB’s webpage for further information on the test.
- Why has the Trainee Card changed?
-
The primary objective of the CSCS card is to provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.
Feedback from industry has told us the acceptance of qualifications not based on a National Occupational Standard caused confusion amongst card holders and their employers.
In particular, Trainee TSM card holders who mistakenly considered SSSTS, SMSTS and NEBOSH General as qualifications that lead to a skilled CSCS card become increasingly frustrated when they realised they could not progress to a skilled CSCS card. Trainee Card holders must obtain a qualification based on a National Occupational Standard before moving onto the appropriate skilled CSCS card.
The construction Industry requested that CSCS stop accepting qualifications not based on a National Occupational Standard and to only issue Trainee Cards when the qualification is based on a National Occupational Standard that leads to a skilled CSCS card.
- Can I apply for the Black Managers card with a construction related academic qualification?
-
Those who have completed a construction related academic qualification should apply for the Academically Qualified Persons (AQP) card. This is available to people who have completed certain construction related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas. Use the AQP search tool to find out if your qualification is accepted for an AQP card.
CSCS do not accept construction related academic qualifications for the Black Manager card. The Black Manager card is only available to those who have completed the relevant Construction Management related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7.
An NVQ/SVQ is gained by completing a range of practical tasks, demonstrating practical skills and displaying underpinning technical knowledge. Completing an NVQs does not require the undertaking of any particular learning program and taking formal written examinations.
An academic qualification is assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete as part of the set course. Candidates may gain the skills and knowledge required for their job but the qualification does not include a practical assessment of the candidate’s work.
In summary – the NVQ is a practical and skills-based qualification and an academic qualification is a knowledge-based qualification.
This is why CSCS issue different cards to those who have completed an NVQ and those who have completed academic qualification. The black manager’s card demonstrates that the cardholder’s practical skills have been assessed, while the white AQP card demonstrates that the cardholder’s knowledge has been assessed.
This does not mean that the manager’s card has a higher standing than the AQP card; the cards are issued at equivalent levels of qualification. What matters is the occupation listed on the reverse of the card. Both the black manager’s card and the white AQP card (depending on the qualification), can have “Management” listed on the reverse of the card.
- How do I find out more?
-
We are committed to keeping the industry updated on progress and further announcements will be made throughout the year. The best way to keep up to date with our progress is to keep an eye on the website www.cscs.co.uk, follow us on Twitter @CSCS or sign up to our free newsletter via the website.
- Why are CSCS removing paper-based postal applications?
-
Postal applications do not deliver good customer service. They are a complex, time-consuming and inefficient way for our customers to make an application and this is why we have decided to withdraw the service.
- When will the changes be implemented?
-
From 30th April 2019 postal application forms will be removed from the CSCS website.
From 30th June 2019 CSCS will stop processing applications received via the post.
- What happens if I make a postal application before 30th June?
-
CSCS will continue to accept and process postal applications up to this date. Your application will be processed and should you meet all of the requirements a card will be issued.
- I have always applied by post. What do I do now?
-
We are encouraging individual applicants to apply using the telephone service.
- How do I apply over the phone?
-
To apply over the phone:
- Pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for your occupation. Find out which test you need to take by using the online card finder.
- If your required card is qualification-based, please send proof of your qualification via the query function in the support section of your online account. For help with this please see our guidance on raising a support query. To find out the occupation-specific qualification you require, use the online card finder.
- Call 0344 994 4777 and pay £36 using a credit or debit card. Your CSCS card will be posted out to you on the next working day.
- Will applying over the phone increase the price of my card?
-
No. The withdrawal of postal applications will not change the price of a card. The card price remains at £36.
- What happens if my postal application arrives after 30th June?
-
CSCS will stop processing postal applications after this date. Should your application arrive after this date it will be returned to you with instructions on how to make a telephone application.
- Can I email an application form after 30th June?
-
After 30th June all applications received via email will be returned to the applicant with a cover note explaining the withdrawal of paper applications and setting out the process for making a telephone application.
- Does this change the employer application process?
-
No. The online employer application process remains the same. This change is only for those who wish to make a single application via the post.
- Is this part of CSCS’s plans to introduce an online service?
-
Yes. In February 2019 CSCS announced plans to introduce a modern service that includes moving the majority of applications online and improving the existing telephone processes.
The removal of the postal application service removes much of the complexity surrounding the old paper-based system and will help pave the way for the introduction of the new service.
- What happens to my CSCS card now?
-
Nothing. This will not change how existing CSCS cards work. Please continue to use the card as you have always done.
- Should I wait for the online service before renewing my card?
-
If your card is due for renewal before the online system is operational we recommend that you apply via the telephone.
However, if your card is due for renewal after the online system is operational we recommend that you apply using the new online application process. Applying for a CSCS card online will be considerably easier, quicker and more convenient than any other means of application.
- How do I find out more?
-
We are committed to keeping the industry updated on any changes made to the scheme. The best way to keep up to date with is to visit the website www.cscs.co.uk, follow us on Twitter @CSCS or sign up to our free newsletter via the CSCS website.
- Why are CSCS removing this exemption to passing the CITB Health, safety and environment test?
-
CSCS are bound by the requirements of the Industrial Strategy for Construction. The Industrial Strategy is overseen by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) who, in 2015, announced that all card schemes displaying the CSCS logo should only issue skilled cards to applicants who hold nationally recognised construction related qualifications and have passed a separate health and safety element.
Accepting the recent completion of an N/SVQ as an exemption to taking the CITB Health, safety and environment test does not meet the requirements of the CLC and as such the exemption will be withdrawn.
You can find out more about the CLC at www.cscs.uk.com/clc
- Are all exemptions being removed?
-
Two other exemptions to the CITB Health, safety and environment test will remain. These are:
- The exemption gained by obtaining a SOLAS Safe Pass card within the last 2 years (for operatives only)
- The exemption gained by competing the health and safety requirements of an apprenticeship (for apprentices only)
- When will the exemption be removed?
-
The exemption will be removed on the 2nd September 2019
- What happens if I apply with the exemption before 2nd September 2019?
-
Applicants who apply with the exemption before 2nd September 2019 will still be able to use the exemption and will not be required to have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test.
- How much does the CITB Health, safety and environment test cost?
-
The cost of the test is £22.50.
There are some organisations who will charge you more. If you are asked to pay more than £22.50, find out what the additional cost is for before you decide to pay the additional fees.
- What if I obtained my CSCS card using the exemption?
-
Your CSCS card will remain valid until the expiry date listed on the card. You will then need to pass the CITB Health, safety and environment test to renew your card.
- How long is a CITB Health, safety and environment test valid for?
-
For the purposes of applying for a CSCS card the CITB Health, safety and environment test must have been passed within the last 2 years. After 2 years CSCS requires applicants to retake the test.
- Who owns the Health, safety and environment test?
-
The test is owned and managed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
There is a common misconception that the test is owned by CSCS and it is often referred to as the CSCS test, this is incorrect.
CSCS’s role is to simply verify that applicants have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test (within the last 2 years).
- How do I apply for a CSCS card?
-
Click here to find out how to apply for a CSCS card.
- How much does a CSCS card cost?
-
CSCS cards cost £36 and the separate CITB Health, safety and environment test costs £22.50. There are organisations that offer card application services. If you are being charged more than £36 for a card or £22.50 for a CITB Health, safety & environment test, check that you understand what additional services you will receive.
- I have just passed the CITB Health, safety and Environment test. Why can’t I get a card?
-
To apply for most CSCS cards, applicants must:
- Provide evidence that they have achieved (or are in the processing of achieving) a nationally recognised construction related qualification relevant to their occupation.
- Pass the appropriate CITB Health, safety and environment test.
- Apply for a CSCS card by calling 0344 994 4777
Unless an applicant has fulfilled all 3 of the above steps, they will not get a CSCS card.
- Who owns a CSCS card?
-
CSCS cards remain the exclusive property of CSCS. Cards are issued to and must be kept in the named cardholder’s secure possession at all times. CSCS reserves the right to unilaterally withdraw a card.
- When will the CITB credit accounts be withdrawn?
-
From 29th November 2019 CITB account holders will not be able to purchase CSCS cards via their CITB credit accounts.
- Why is CSCS ending payments from CITB credit accounts?
-
Later this year CITB will cease administering the scheme on CSCS’s behalf. This means CITB will no longer be collecting payments for card applications and therefore we need to remove ourselves from CITB’s employer accounts process.
- How will I make payments in the future?
-
Those wishing to continue using an account facility to pay for their CSCS cards will be required to set up a new prepaid account within the new CSCS online system. Details on how to create an account will soon be made available on www.cscs.uk.com/employer.
- Are CITB credit accounts being closed down?
-
No, CITB credit accounts will remain. This announcement only affects CSCS card payments. CITB account holders will be able to continue using their CITB accounts to pay for other CITB services such as publications and Site Safety Plus.
- I have a CITB credit account, can I use it to pay for CSCS cards now?
-
Until 29th November you can continue to make payments in the usual way (via credit accounts or via payment over the phone).
- How do I set up a new prepaid account facility with CSCS?
-
Details on how to set up a pre-paid account can be found here: https://www.cscs.uk.com/applying-for-cards/employer-applications/prepaidaccounts/
- Does this affect individual applications?
-
This change does not affect individual applications. Individuals applying for cards over the telephone will continue to pay via a debit or credit card. However, when the new service is launched the quickest way to apply and pay for your card will be via the online system.
- How do I find out more?
-
There will soon be guidance on setting up a prepaid employer account on www.cscs.uk.com/employer. Should you wish to speak to a member of the CSCS team to discuss your application and payment options then please call on 0344 994 4777.
- What is an employer application?
-
An Employer Application allows someone to apply for a CSCS card on behalf of somebody else, or on the behalf of multiple other people included together in one application. These applications are known as Employer Applications as they are commonly used by employers to apply for CSCS cards on the behalf of their workforce. However, this process is also used by colleges, training providers and other organisations which need to apply for multiple cards at a time.
- How do I submit an employer application?
-
To submit an Employer Application, you must first register an account on CSCS Online as an Employer, Training Provider or Third Party. This will give your account access to the employer application system. Please note that you will be signing up as a company or organisation, not as an individual.
A more detailed guide to the employer application process can be found here.
- How do I submit multiple applications?
-
When you complete an application, you will be given the option to save and add another. In this way you can submit a number of applications at once.
A more detailed guide to the employer application process can be found here.
- How much does an employer application cost?
-
Employer applications cost £36 per application, the same price as individual applications.
- How do I pay for an employer application?
-
You can pay for an employer application using a debit/credit card or a CSCS Prepaid account. Please note that the prepaid account service is only available to those registered with CSCS as Employers, Training Providers and Third Parties.
- Can I submit an application to renew and replace cards?
-
Yes. During the employer application process, you are given a choice to apply to a new card, renew a card or replace a lost/damaged card.
- What information do I need to submit on an employer application?
-
To submit an employer application, you will need, for each application you submit:
- A scanned copy of the candidate’s qualification certificate, or proof that they are registered to complete a recognised construction related qualification relevant to their occupation
- The test ID number from the candidate’s CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test. This can be found at the top of their pass certificate
- To know the type of CITB HS&E test the candidate completed: There are several tests available, the correct test must be selected from the drop-down list. The type of test can also be found at the top of their pass certificate
- The correct personal details of the candidate, including their address, telephone number, date of birth, surname, national insurance number and CSCS registration number (if they have held a CSCS card previously).
- The candidate’s email address. If the candidate already has a CSCS Online account then this should be the email address they used to sign up for their account. Please note that a different email address is required for each applicant and a generic company email address should not be used.
- A credit/debit card or a CSCS Prepaid Account to pay the £36 application fee (per card).
- Can I submit an employer application for someone who does/does not have a CSCS Online Account?
-
Yes. If you apply on behalf of a candidate who does not yet have a CSCS Online account, then one will be created for them during the application process. If you apply on behalf of a candidate who does have a CSCS Online account, then CSCS Online will search for their account using the personal details you provide, and link their account to your application.
- How do I delete an application?
-
You can delete draft applications by signing into your CSCS Online account and clicking the “Applications” tab at the top of the screen. This page will display a list of all CSCS card applications you have saved as a draft. The option to delete a draft is located to the right of each entry.
If you wish to cancel an application which has been submitted, contact CSCS.
- What should I do if I have a problem submitting an employer application?
-
If you are having problems submitting an employer application:
- Check that you are registered as an Employer, Training Provider or Third Party.
- Check our employer application guide here.
- Contact CSCS by using the Query function in your CSCS Online account.
- What should I do if I lose my HS&E test score report
-
A copy of your HS&E test score report isn’t required to apply for or renew your CSCS card.
All you need is your CITB ID number which can be found on your booking confirmation email when you booked your test or by accessing your CITB test account (there are reminders if you have forgotten your log-in details).
If you do not have your CITB ID number, then you can still apply or renew a CSCS card. When you apply, CSCS Online will attempt to validate your H,S&E test using your personal information, including your name, date of birth, national insurance number and postcode. If this validation process fails, then the CSCS team will attempt to manually validate your test. This may delay your application.
If you still need a copy of your score report, please use one of these methods:
- If you took your test after 26th June 2019, you can print your score report by logging into your Pearson VUE account. You will find this under the heading ‘score reports’. https://wsr.pearsonvue.com/testtaker/signin/SignInPage/CITB
If you are still unable to find your score report you can contact Pearson VUE directly, but there is a charge of £10 to provide a duplicate score report.

- What is your data privacy policy?
-
You can read our data privacy policy here.
- What are virtual cards?
-
A virtual CSCS card is just the same as your plastic CSCS card but stored on your phone rather than in your pocket. Your virtual CSCS card can be accessed using the My CSCS app on your phone.
- How do I download a virtual card?
-
As soon as the application status indicates the card has been sent for printing, the cardholder can download the virtual card and use it on site immediately – no need to wait for the card in the post.
- How much does a virtual card cost?
-
Your virtual CSCS card does not cost anything. It is included in the price you paid to apply for your physical CSCS card.
- I already have a CSCS card. Can I get a virtual card as well?
-
Yes. Claim your card using the My CSCS app, and a virtual card will be automatically created for you using the data from your existing CSCS card.
- How do I use a virtual card?
-
Click here[link] to read our guides on how to use a virtual card.
- How do virtual cards work?
-
Virtual cards work by replicating your physical CSCS card digitally onto your phone. This digital card can then be used in the same way as your physical card.
- Do virtual cards show the same information as a regular card?
-
Your virtual CSCS card will show the same information as your physical CSCS card, such as your name, qualifications and the card’s expiry date.
- Can a virtual card be used instead of the plastic card?
-
Yes. As a virtual card shows the same information as a physical CSCS card, it can be used to show that your training and qualifications have been certified by CSCS for your role, just like a physical CSCS card.
- Is the virtual card secure? What’s to stop someone using my phone and virtual card to get on site?
-
CSCS are keen to highlight to employers that virtual cards are safe and secure, but just like the traditional plastic card, they should always be electronically checked using the Go Smart software. This is to ensure the card is valid, the photo is of the correct person and to confirm that the holder has the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on site.
The my CSCS app that contains the virtual CSCS card is secure, so it is not possible to edit the virtual card to show anything which has not been verified by CSCS.
- How do I check if a virtual card is valid?
-
The most effective and secure way to check any CSCS card is by using CSCS Smart Check. CSCS Smart Check allows all 2.1 million cards in the construction industry displaying the CSCS logo to be verified using a single interface.
The platform’s API can be built into existing site access systems or card checking equipment while it can also be used via CSCSSmartCheck.co.uk or downloaded as an app using Google Play or the App Store.
- What is Go Smart and how do I use it?
-
Go Smart is the free Construction Industry App for reading and checking physical and virtual CSCS smartcards using a smartphone, tablet or PC. Go Smart not only checks the validity of CSCS cards, but can also record information about them and utilise a number of other helpful tools. You can find out more at www.gosmart.co.uk.
- Can I use a photo of my virtual card to show I am certified?
-
No. The QR code which appears beneath a virtual card changes, so it will not work if you try to use a picture of the QR code at another time.
- Do I need to carry my CSCS card with me if I have a virtual card?
-
In theory no. But it will take time for the industry to get used to the virtual card. So, for now CSCS recommends carrying both. But if your site manager says it is OK to present the virtual card then you can leave the plastic card at home. But be mindful that the next site you work on may want to see the plastic card.
- My site managers will only accept physical CSCS cards, not virtual ones. What should I do?
-
Ultimately, the decision on how to use CSCS cards are made by site management. CSCS is happy to provide further information on the use and security of virtual CSCS cards to concerned site managers.
- I can’t find my virtual card. What should I do?
-
Follow the instruction on the App Support page to find your CSCS card. If you cannot find your virtual card, ensure that you have successfully claimed your card, or that your card application has finished processing.
- What do I need to apply for my CSCS card?
-
You will need:
- A scanned copy of your qualification certificate, or proof that you are registered to complete a recognised construction related qualification relevant to your occupation. This will need to be uploaded as part of your application.
- The CITB test ID number from your CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test, this can be found at the top of your pass certificate. You must have passed the appropriate test within the last 2 years.
- A credit or debit card to pay the £36 application fee.
- How do I find out which CSCS card I should apply for?
-
To find out what card you need for your occupation please use the card finder on the CSCS website. This will also confirm which HS&E test is required.
- Why do I need an CSCS logoed Industry Placement card to gain access to a construction site?
-
CSCS logoed cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on site. By ensuring the workforce are appropriately qualified the card plays its part in improving standards and safety on UK construction sites. Most principal contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid card.
- Apart from CSCS, which other certification schemes use the CSCS logo?
-
There are 38 recognised CSCS partner schemes, who collectively form the CSCS Alliance, and their details can be found here.
- Does it matter which certification scheme a student gets an Industry Placement card from?
-
If an Industry Placement card displays the CSCS logo then it will allow access to site. It will be necessary for students to get their Industry Placement card from the certification scheme relevant to the curriculum being studied. This will ensure an efficient progression transition through the required cards. So, for example, transitioning from the Industry Placement card to an Apprentice card and then to a Skilled Worker card. Details of the different certification schemes and the occupations they cover can be found here.
- Will students be eligible for a CSCS logoed Skilled Card once they have completed a T Level or traineeship?
-
No, students who have completed a T Level or Traineeship will not be eligible for a Skilled Card. If they are progressing onto an Apprenticeship, they will be eligible for an Apprentice card. If they are registering onto an N/SVQ or other recognised alternative occupational competence qualification, then they will be eligible for the Trainee card. Completion of a recognised Apprenticeship, N/SVQ or other recognised alternative occupational competence qualification will allow them a Skilled Card.
- What types of qualification programmes require industry placements of 30 days or more?
-
Examples of qualification and training programmes requiring a minimum of 30 days’ work placement include T Levels, Traineeships, Foundation and Progression Qualifications (Wales), Sandwich Degrees.
- What are T Levels?
-
T Levels are an alternative to A levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses. Equivalent to 3 A levels, a T Level is a two-year programme that focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. They also include a minimum 45 day work placement. Detailed information can be found here.
- What are Traineeships?
-
A traineeship is a course with work experience that gets you ready for work or an apprenticeship. It can last from 6 weeks up to 1 year, though most traineeships last for less than 6 months. Detailed information can be found here.
- What is a Sandwich degree?
-
A Sandwich Degree is an academic degree course involving a practical work placement.
- Are the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) work experience initiatives applicable?
-
The short DWP work experience initiatives are not relevant to this card as they are not linked to any national qualification programme initiative such as T levels or Traineeships.
- What card will learners on the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) work experience initiatives need?
-
Learners on short work experience initiatives, such as those offered by the DWP do not require any card. In these instances, it is the employer responsibility to ensure the learners are inducted, always supervised and kept safe.
- What are the eligibility criteria for the Industrial Placement card?
-
- Be aged 16 or above.
- Registered onto a further or higher education qualification or training programme that is not categorised as being ‘occupational competence’ and requires a minimum of 30 days’ work placement. The qualification being undertaken should be recognised as providing a pathway into construction and the built environment via an approved Apprenticeship, registration onto an approved occupational competence qualification such as an N/SVQ or is eligible for a CSCS logoed Academically Qualified Persons (AQP) card.
- Short work experience initiatives such as the two-week statutory school curriculum requirement are not in scope.
- Successfully pass the CITB Health, afety and Environment Operative test or one of the equivalent tests offered by CSCS Partner Schemes.
- How long is the Industry Placement card valid for?
-
The card will be valid for three years and not be renewable.
- What if a student requires more than 3 years to complete a work placement?
-
In special circumstances, Certification Schemes will consider extending a cards validity. For example, this might be when a card holder has not been able to complete their work placement as planned through sickness or another valid reason.
- Who applies for the Industrial Placement card, the student, training provider or employer?
-
It is expected that with T Levels and Traineeships, the training provider will apply for their student’s cards. This will be different with Degrees however where it is expected the student will apply. In all instances, students should check with their training providers before making an application.
- What is the application process for the Industrial Placement card?
-
Each card scheme has their own application processes which can be found on their websites.
Links to each CSCS Partner Card scheme websites can be found here.
A flowchart that demonstrates the general requirements for applying for a card can be seen below
- Why does a student have to take a Health and Safety test to get the card?
-
Passing an independent Health and Safety test It is a requirement of all CSCS logoed cards. This ensures that everybody has the necessary core health and safety knowledge required to work safely on a construction site.
- Which Health and Safety test is required?
-
It will be necessary to pass the Health and Safety test relevant to the Certification Scheme that is issuing the Industry Placement card. The Construction Industry Training Boards (CITB) Health, Safety and Environment test is used by many schemes including CSCS. Details of this test can be found here.
- How much will it cost to get an Industry Placement card?
-
The cost of getting an Industry Placement card differs across Certification Schemes and it will be necessary to check their websites to find out what they charge. CSCS charges £36 for the card and the separate CITB Health, safety and environment test costs £22.50.
- Is it the responsibility of students to pay for their Industry Placement card?
-
If a student is undertaking T Levels or Traineeships, then the expectation is that the Training Provider will pay. It will be necessary to check who will have to pay with other qualification and training programme types.
- If an employer is registered in-scope to CITB, can they claim grant support to help with the cost of providing a work placement?
-
CITB provides a grant to help employers facilitate work experience/placement. Details can be found here.
It should be noted however that this grant is being discontinued from October 2021.
- Is there any general advice and guidance about work placements available to help employers, training providers and students?
-
There is a lot of advice and guidance available to help with work placements. This can be found at:
T Level industry placements delivery guidance – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Annex D: Industry placement supplementary recommendations (publishing.service.gov.uk)
Home – T Levels and Industry Placements (employerindustryplacements.co.uk) - What if I hold an existing card?
-
If you already have an existing CSCS card you can claim this from our previous system. Please follow these simple steps to claim your card.
- Once you have created your online account, please select ‘My cards’ from the main menu, then select ‘Claim my card’.
- Enter your registration number and press enter.
- This will link your previous card to your new online account, while allowing to keep the same registration number.
You can then either renew your card, or apply for the same or a different card.
Please note: If your old card has expired or you hold a Labourer, PQP or AQP card you will not be able to renew. Instead, please make a new application and upload your qualifications when requested.
- How much does an Industry Placement card cost?
-
How much depends on which of the four schemes you apply to (CSCS, ECS, PMES & SKILLcard). In CSCS’s case we charge £36.
However, in all cases, it is the Training Provider who pays, not the student.
The Department for Education have confirmed Providers are expected to pay for their students’ IP cards.
The money is available to them via their funding formulae, of which a proportion is to support facilitating work placements.
- Why is CSCS removing the need to provide occupational evidence and the associated endorsement from the reverse of the card?
-
Following consultation with industry the National Working Group for Occupational Work Supervision has confirmed the removal of the endorsement list.
Due to this change CSCS no longer requires applicants applying for the Supervisory Gold card with an OWS N/SVQ to submit additional evidence demonstrating competence in their occupation.
- What evidence do I now need to produce when applying for the Gold Supervisory card with an OWS S/NVQ?
-
Applicants need only to provide evidence of their OWS N/SVQ and to have passed the Specialist Supervisor level CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last two years.
- How do you guarantee a supervisor has sufficient experience in the trade they are overseeing if the endorsement is removed?
-
The National Working Group for Occupational Work Supervision has confirmed it is the responsibility of employers to ensure that their supervisors are competent to carry out their duties.
- My card is due to be renewed, can I keep the endorsement previously issued on the reverse of my card?
-
Yes, if your card currently displays an endorsement and you wish to keep it there will be no change. When renewing your card, you can renew as normal with a Specialist Supervisor level CITB Health, safety and environment test passed within the last 2 years.
- Can I remove the endorsement on the reverse of my card?
-
Yes, you have two options:
Wait until your card is due to expire and apply for a new card (not renewal) and provide a copy of your qualification and confirmation of passing the Specialist Supervisor level CITB Health, safety and environment test within the last 2 years.
OR
Replace your existing card early. In this scenario you will be required contact the CSCS Helpline on 0344 994 4777 and they will be able to process an update card application for you over the phone. When the new card is issued the endorsement will be removed from the back of the card. In this scenario you are required to pay £36 for the new card.
- What if my card was issued through a CSCS Partner Card Scheme?
-
These changes do not impact CSCS Partner Card Schemes as Partner Scheme issue cards for Specialist sectors so their Supervisor cards will reflect the occupational area being worked in.
- Will the price of the card change?
-
There are no plans to change the price of the card, the price of the card remains at £36.
- How do I apply for a Gold Supervisory card with an OWS S/NVQ?
-
Visit the Gold Supervisory webpage for further info.
- Why has the General Construction Operations occupation title changed to Groundworker?
-
In April 2019, CSCS received notification of the closure of the General Construction Operations title from the standard setting body and this was replaced with the title of Groundworker.
The industry working group that reviewed the qualification felt the Groundworker title better reflected the work being undertaken by these operatives and that General Construction Operations was too vague, leading to confusion on site.
In December 2019, CSCS decided to only recognise this occupation and remove the occupation of General Construction Operations for all card applications, whether achieved before or after the change, to allow consistency and transparency for this occupation.
To clarify, this change affects both renewal and new applications, with all applicants now given the occupation title of Groundworker on their card.
- Is there a charge to download the app?
-
No. The app is free to download from the Apple Store and Google Play or other smart phone app stores.
- What are the benefits of CSCS Smart Check?
-
CSCS Smart Check gives users a simple solution to check all CSCS Alliance cards in one place. Rather than separate apps, web portals and call centres, CSCS Smart Check means all sites and projects can undertake checks to assess if people are qualified and competent for their role when entering a project.
- How does CSCS Smart Check work?
-
By scanning a CSCS-logoed card, you can verify it is genuine and details correct for over 2 million construction workers in the UK.
CSCS Smart Check is available as an API, an app and a desktop portal and has a live feed into databases of each scheme and is a collaborative project between more than 35 different organisations.
- Can I use the CSCS Smart Check app without internet signal or WiFi?
-
The CSCS Smart Check app will always require an internet or mobile data connection to work. If you do not have a connection then please follow company procedures for checking cards.
- I have scanned a card but no record can be found. Why is this?
-
If no record of an individual is found, it may be because the card has expired, has been invalidated or may be fraudulent. Please check by manually entering the correct details. If still no record is returned, please follow normal project procedures for those unable to show a valid CSCS or Partner Scheme card.
- How do I scan a card when using the app?
-
When using the CSCS Smart Check app, if you are presented with a chipped or contactless card, click the “Contactless” button to read the card when it is tapped onto the smart phone or device. If you are presented with a virtual card or QR code on a card, click “QR Code” button to scan the code through the camera of the device. There is also the ability to check a card manually by entering the relevant details.
- My card has expired. Will it show within the app?
-
Only valid, in-date cards will display within CSCS Smart Check. Please contact your scheme to renew your card.
- What should I do if the app isn't working?
-
Should you encounter technical problems with CSCS Smart Check, please follow the instructions within the app’s support page. This can be found within the app itself or via the CSCS website.
- How would we report a fraudulent card?
-
If you suspect a fake card, follow the instructions contained within the app’s help & support page or the guidance on the CSCS website.
- If a card has been lost or stolen and a replacement card issued, would the old card show as valid on CSCS Smart Check?
-
This would depend on the scheme in question. Provided the lost or stolen card has been flagged and removed from the respective database, it will not be recognised as valid by CSCS Smart Check. Similarly, provided the replacement card has been registered and is active, it can be verified by CSCS Smart Check.
- What is the CSCS test?
-
Contrary to popular belief, there is actually no such thing as a ‘CSCS test’. This is simply the name commonly and incorrectly given to the CITB Health, safety and environment test, as it is a requirement for a CSCS card. The test is owned and managed by CITB.
CSCS are not responsible for the development or delivery of construction related training and qualifications.
Find out more about the CITB Health, safety and environment test.
- What is changing with Industry Accreditation?
-
Cards issued under Industry Accreditation (IA) are being withdrawn and cannot be renewed via this method.
- When is Industry Accreditation withdrawal happening?
-
All Industry Accreditation (IA) cards issued from 1st Jan 2020 will expire on 31st Dec 2024
- What does Industry Accreditation withdrawal mean for me?
-
There are approximately 70,000 IA card holders – many have between 20 to 30 years’ experience and the majority are in supervisory and site management roles.
You need to put a plan in place to move off Industry Accreditation before your card expires at the end of 2024.
What that plan looks like depends on your occupation and what qualifications you may already hold.
- Will I have to do the N/SVQ again to renew my CSCS card?
-
No, N/SVQ’s generally are lifelong qualifications so once they are completed, they do not need to be completed again.
- Would I need to take time off work?
-
No, SVQ/NVQs are completed in the workplace, however, you will need some time to spend with your assessor, planning the assessment and feeding back their assessment of your evidence and/or work.
- Won't it take me years to complete an N/SVQ?
-
S/NVQs can be achieved in a minimum of 14 weeks, but usually takes between 6-12 months from registration though to receiving your certificate. The time taken will depend on the availability of evidence, for example an experienced manager with numerous years’ experience could complete it in a shorter period of time, whereas an inexperienced candidate will take more time – no two cases are the same. As this is an assessment rather than a training course, you will work with your assessor to collate evidence of your skills via a range of assessment methods.
- Will it be expensive to complete an experienced worker assessment?
-
The cost is set by individual providers, but as experienced workers are unlikely to need any upskilling or training, the assessment-only route provides a quicker and simpler way to achievement.
CITB grants are available to support CITB registered employers achieve recognised qualifications.
To further support CITB registered employers during the Industry Accreditation card transition period, a number of CITB grants will receive enhanced funding.
To find out about the CITB grants available and enhanced funding please visit the CITB website.
- Do I have to go back to college to complete my assessment?
-
No, this assessment is completed in the workplace and in many cases remotely. As you are likely to be a highly experienced worker, the process should be relatively simple and there are many ways to show evidence of your competence, including:
-
- A Professional Discussion
- Knowledge Evidence Questions.
- Reflective accounts
- Witness Testimonies (confirming previous workplace activities undertaken),
- Product Evidence, e.g. minutes of meetings, RAMS, products of work
- Observations
-
- How do I find a training provider?
-
To find a training provider and register for your qualification, please use CITB’s Construction Training Directory.
The Construction Training Directory is where you will be able to find the training you need that is delivered by CITB Approved Training Organisations (ATOs).
- What is Go Smart?
-
Go Smart is a mobile app and desktop application that has been used since 2010 to validate certain cards with a CSCS logo. Go Smart will be turned off on March 31st 2024 and all existing users of Go Smart who wish to retain a card checking function as part of site induction and/or site access solution must put transition plans in place to move across to CSCS Smart Check as soon as possible.
CSCS is urging employers currently using Go Smart to discuss the withdrawal with their IT providers so that site access or card checking can continue from April 1st, 2024.
- What is Changing with Go Smart?
-
Following a CLC requirement announced in December 2020, all 38 schemes that carry the CSCS logo, joined together to launch a common app to validate cards. The app was launched in April 2022 and is called CSCS Smart Check. Unlike Go Smart, CSCS Smart Check can validate every card with a CSCS logo, regardless of the scheme. This is the first time that all 2.1 million cards displaying the CSCS logo can be validated by a single app.
With CSCS Smart Check now developed and rolled out, CSCS is to withdraw Go Smart on March 31st 2024 and after this date attempted CSCS card reads via Go Smart will not work.
CSCS is urging employers currently using Go Smart to discuss the withdrawal with their IT providers so that site access or card checking can continue from April 1st, 2024.
- How will the withdrawal of Go Smart impact construction sites?
-
Sites will no longer be able to use Go Smart and any equipment that uses Go Smart’s API will no longer be able to check cards.
CSCS is urging employers currently using Go Smart to discuss the withdrawal with their IT providers so that site access or card checking can continue from April 1st, 2024.
The platform’s API can be built into existing site access systems or card checking equipment while it can also be used via CSCSSmartCheck.co.uk or downloaded as an app using Google Play or the App Store.
- How will third parties with IT integration change?
-
Go Smart integrates with a range of IT Partners, for example to use a CSCS card as part of a gate entry system. All of these IT Partners have been contacted and informed of Go Smart’s withdrawal from April 1st 2024.
- Where can I find out more information about CSCS Smart Check?
-
Full details on CSCS Smart Check are available at via CSCS.uk.com/SmartCheck.
CSCS is urging employers currently using Go Smart to discuss its withdrawal with their IT providers so that site access or card checking can continue from April 1st, 2024. In the first instance please contact your IT provider to discuss the development of a transition plan to CSCS Smart Check.
- If my IA card was issued before January 2020, do I have to get a new card?
-
If your IA card is due for renewal now, you can renew it via the IA route until 30th June 2024, but regardless of its issue date, it will expire on 31st December 2024. Before this deadline you will need to transition to a card via one of the pathways outlined in this guidance. As an assessment can take on average between 6-12 months, you should put a plan in place now to ensure you can smoothly transition from your IA card to one linked to a qualification.
- Can I get CITB grants for an S/NVQ if I am self-employed?
-
CITB grants can only be paid to employers that are registered and in scope of CITB. If you are self-employed and working on a contractor’s site which is registered with CITB, you should speak to the contractor about enrolling you on an S/NVQ and they can claim the funding upon your achievement of the qualification. Contractors should check funding eligibility with CITB before enrolment.
- I have an IA card issued by one of the CSCS Alliance Partner Schemes – do I still need to replace my card?
-
Yes – the CLC Statement requires all cards that bear the CSCS Logo to phase out IA by 31 December 2024. These guidance pages relate to the main CSCS Scheme, although the processes will be very similar for the CSCS Alliance Partner Schemes. Individuals with IA cards issued by a partner scheme should contact them directly for specific guidance on how to renew their cards.
- Can I renew my Industry Accreditation CSCS card if it expires between now and 31st December 2024?
-
Industry Accreditation cards can still be renewed, if their expiry date is prior to 30th June 2024. However, the renewed card will expire on 31st December 2024. Any Industry Accreditation CSCS card with an expiry date of 1st July 2024 onwards cannot be renewed.
- Are AQP/PQP card holders able to supervise sites?
-
Construction site supervisors are advised to complete the NVQ Diploma Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision in order to retain their Gold Supervisory card. The AQP and PQP routes available to those on IA would be more applicable to technical occupations within the Supervisor card such as Surveying, Buying, Site Technical Assistant, etc.
- How do I know if I have an Industry Accreditation card?
-
If you have an Industry Accreditation card, the rear of your physical CSCS card will state ‘Industry Accreditation’. This will also be stated on your virtual card should you use My CSCS.
Individuals can also use one of the other card checking options listed here.
- What help is available for the self-employed?
-
CITB grant funding is available to CITB Registered employers who are up to date with their Levy Returns.
Employers can apply for this grant for all directly employed staff on the payroll, business owners and partners, and all subcontractors. Those self-employed or sub-contracted on projects should speak to the primary contractor in the first instance regarding grant funding.
For further information, please visit our IA Grant Information page.

A Professional Discussion
Knowledge Evidence Questions.
Reflective accounts
Witness Testimonies (confirming previous workplace activities undertaken),
Product Evidence, e.g. minutes of meetings, RAMS, products of work
Observations - Will I have to do the N/SVQ again to renew my CSCS cards in 5 years?
-
No, S/NVQs generally are lifelong qualifications so once they are completed, they do not need to be completed again.
- Why is Industry Accreditation being withdrawn?
-
At the beginning of 2015 the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) announced via the Industrial Strategy: Construction 2025, that industry, including trade associations, contractors, clients and government, should specify and promote card schemes displaying the CSCS logo with no equivalents accepted. This is known as the One Industry Logo action.
Among the requirements set out by the CLC is that all construction industry card schemes must operate with nationally recognised qualifications (usually NVQ/SVQs) in place for all occupations.
Further information on the CLC’s requirements can be found here.
