Key industry figures gathered at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) today to mark the 30th anniversary of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
The event gathered luminaries from across construction and the Built Environment, including representatives from Government, Trade Unions, Industry Bodies, CSCS Alliance members, and training providers.
With the event featuring a host of speeches detailing the past, present and future of the scheme, the event also sought to reinforce CSCS’s pivotal role in raising and upholding safety standards across UK construction sites over the past three decades.
The afternoon was expertly hosted by Construction News Editor Colin Marrs and commenced with a speech from Dame Janet Paraskeva, Chair of the CSCS Group, tracing the evolution of the scheme and its enduring impact.
This was followed by an insightful address from Katy Dowding, President and CEO of Skanska UK, who emphasised the significance of Consistency, Collaboration, and Confidence in fostering a resilient and sustainable construction industry.
Highlighting CSCS’s commitment to innovation, Sean Kearns, CSCS Group Chief Executive, rounded off the event, unveiling the new-look My CSCS app – the scheme’s digital skills passport.
This digital platform serves as a secure repository for users to store and share their qualifications, skills, and training records – an essential advancement for modernising credential management in construction.
He also reinforced the message for industry to adopt CSCS Smart Check – a cutting-edge technology that serves as construction’s border control system, designed to verify core details from within the digital skills passport.
“This 30-year milestone is not just about celebrating the longevity of the CSCS card scheme — it’s about recognising the trust, collaboration and commitment that have driven standards across our industry while also looking to the future,” he explained.
“From day one, CSCS has been about making construction safer, more professional, and more respected. That mission hasn’t changed — but how we deliver it must evolve to meet the demands of a modern, more accountable sector.”
“With the launch of the new My CSCS app, in tandem with CSCS Smart Check, we’re laying the foundations for a more connected and transparent industry. These tools don’t just verify skills — they empower individuals, support employers, and help the entire supply chain uphold its responsibilities under the Building Safety Act. This is the infrastructure for a smarter, safer future — built by the industry, for the industry.”
