FAQs

  • Who owns the Health, safety and environment test?
  • The test is owned and managed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

There is a common misconception that the test is owned by CSCS and it is often referred to as the CSCS test, this is incorrect.

CSCS’s role is to simply verify that applicants have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test (within the last 2 years).

  • How do I apply for a CSCS card?
  • Click here to find out how to apply for a CSCS card.

  • How much does a CSCS card cost?
  • CSCS cards cost £36 and the separate CITB Health, safety and environment test costs £22.50. There are organisations that offer card application services. If you are being charged more than £36 for a card or £22.50 for a CITB Health, safety & environment test, check that you understand what additional services you will receive.

  • I have just passed the CITB Health, safety and Environment test. Why can’t I get a card?
  • To apply for most CSCS cards, applicants must:

    1. Provide evidence that they have achieved (or are in the processing of achieving) a nationally recognised construction related qualification relevant to their occupation.
    2. Pass the appropriate CITB Health, safety and environment test.
    3. Apply for a CSCS card by calling 0344 994 4777

Unless an applicant has fulfilled all 3 of the above steps, they will not get a CSCS card.

  • Who owns a CSCS card?
  • CSCS cards remain the exclusive property of CSCS.  Cards are issued to and must be kept in the named cardholder’s secure possession at all times. CSCS reserves the right to unilaterally withdraw a card.

  • When will the CITB credit accounts be withdrawn?
  • From 29th November 2019 CITB account holders will not be able to purchase CSCS cards via their CITB credit accounts.

  • Why is CSCS ending payments from CITB credit accounts?
  • Later this year CITB will cease administering the scheme on CSCS’s behalf. This means CITB will no longer be collecting payments for card applications and therefore we need to remove ourselves from CITB’s employer accounts process.

  • How will I make payments in the future?
  • Those wishing to continue using an account facility to pay for their CSCS cards will be required to set up a new prepaid account within the new CSCS online system. Details on how to create an account will soon be made available on www.cscs.uk.com/employer.

  • Are CITB credit accounts being closed down?
  • No, CITB credit accounts will remain. This announcement only affects CSCS card payments. CITB account holders will be able to continue using their CITB accounts to pay for other CITB services such as publications and Site Safety Plus.

  • I have a CITB credit account, can I use it to pay for CSCS cards now?
  • Until 29th November you can continue to make payments in the usual way (via credit accounts or via payment over the phone).
