Go Smart withdrawal

  • What is Changing with Go Smart?
  • Following a CLC requirement (announced in December 2020) all 38 schemes that carry the CSCS logo, joined together to launch a common app to validate cards. The app was launched in April 2022 and is called CSCS Smart Check. Unlike Go Smart, CSCS Smart Check can validate every card with a CSCS logo, regardless of the scheme. This is the first time that all 2.1 million cards displaying the CSCS logo can be validated by a single app.

To ensure clear communication to the industry, following the Phase 2 deployment of CSCS Smart Check, CSCS has a plan to withdraw Go Smart. The exact timescales for the Go Smart withdrawal will be confirmed in the coming weeks. In the meantime, CSCS is recommending that you switch to using CSCS Smart Check.

  • How will the withdrawal of Go Smart impact construction sites?
  • Sites will no longer be able to use Go Smart. They will need to use CSCS Smart Check instead.  CSCS Smart Check is free of charge, and validates cards from all 38 schemes, this should simplify the card checking process on site.

A small minority of sites still use the PC based version of Go Smart, this will also be retired, and these sites will need to use the CSCS Smart Check mobile app.

Some sites also use the online card checker on the Go Smart web site, these sites can either use the CSCS Smart Check app to validate cards from any scheme, or use the CITB Card checker (https://www.citb.co.uk/courses-and-qualifications/check-a-card-training-record/online-card-checker/) to validate cards from CSCS, CPCS and CISRS.  Other schemes also have their own online card checkers.

  • Where can I find out more information about CSCS Smart Check?
  • Full details on Smart Check are available at: https://www.cscs.uk.com/about/cscs-smart-check/

  • Is the functionality in Smart Check the same as Go Smart?
  • Just like Go Smart a scan of a card will confirm if the card is valid and display the card holders training and qualification record. The 38 card schemes displaying the CSCS logo are working on an updated version of the app which is planned to go live in March with additional functionality.

  • What about other schemes that use Go Smart?
  • Approximately 10 other schemes also use Go Smart.  These schemes have already integrated with Smart Check and will be able to use Smart Check in the future.

  • How will third parties with IT integration change?
  • Go Smart integrates with a range of IT Partners, for example to use a CSCS card as part of a gate entry system.  All of these IT Partners have been contacted and are in the process of being migrated to Smart Check.

  • What is Go Smart?
  • Go Smart is a mobile app and desktop application that has been used since 2010 to validate cards with a CSCS logo, for CSCS itself and approximately 10 other card schemes.  The service allows a card to be scanned and the cardholder details (training and qualification records) to be validated on site.
