Asbestos occupations moved to Partner Schemes

Published: January 30, 2018

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is notifying the industry that asbestos related occupations are being moved to alternative schemes.

CSCS has been working closely with the Asbestos sector, and has agreed that from 31st March 2018 CSCS will no longer issue cards for Asbestos Removal Operatives, Analysts/Surveyors, Asbestos Supervisors and Asbestos Contract Managers. The following Partner Card Schemes will issue cards to the asbestos sector:

ARCA (more information) will issue cards to:

  • Asbestos Removal Operatives

ATAC (more information) will issue cards to:

  • Asbestos Analysts
  • Asbestos Surveyors

ACAD (more information) will issue cards to:

  • Asbestos Removal Operative
  • Asbestos Analysts
  • Asbestos Surveyors
  • Supervisors
  • Contract Managers

From the 31st March 2018, all new applications both for first time applications and renewals for asbestos related occupations must be directed to one of the above schemes.

CSCS applications received before 31st March 2018 will be issued with a CSCS card that is valid for five years, however this card is non-renewable and the card holder will be required to transfer to one of the asbestos schemes when their card expires.

CSCS Scheme Manager Angeleen Hill said “The asbestos sector is best placed to determine what qualifications are appropriate for the sector and I wholeheartedly support the asbestos sector stepping up and taking responsibility for the carding of these occupations. This is positive news for the asbestos sector and the people who work in it.

“It’s really encouraging to see another example of sectors working together to meet the requirements of the Construction Leadership Council and edging the industry ever closer to a fully qualified workforce.”

As part of the card renewal process CSCS will be reminding card holders of the steps to be taken to move across to an asbestos scheme.
