CSCS Smart Check upgrade delivers richer site-level data to support industry workforce planning

May 14, 2026

New API fields capturing location, site ID and reason-for-read are now live, strengthening Smart Check’s ability to inform industry.

The card verification platform, CSCS Smart Check, has been upgraded to return a greater range of information to employers and industry, including the reason for a card scan plus the site ID and GPS coordinates for the location where the read took place.

Used by construction’s biggest contractors, including Morgan Sindall, Wates and Mace, CSCS Smart Check is the only platform to verify all 2.3 million cards carrying the CSCS logo.

In addition to helping ensure compliance with the Building Safety Act by quickly and securely verifying cards, the updated version of Smart Check will also be able to inform industry workforce planning.

While the platform is available through a free website and app, the Smart Check API is built into site access systems and induction platforms by approved IT Partners or employers directly, with the latest specification now including:

  • GPS coordinates identifying where the card was read.
  • Site ID or name identifying the location of the site.
  • Read reason, indicating whether the check was a pre-induction, induction, re-induction, routine check, site entry, or other purpose.

The upgrade significantly increases the value of Smart Check verification data, when contributing to a national workforce dataset.

Combined with the CSCS Alliance’s Workforce Insights – which offers anonymised, data-driven intelligence from more than 2.3 million cardholders across 37 schemes – Smart Check is now able to provide an enhanced on-the-ground geographic illustration of skills and occupational volumes.

CSCS is already informing the data and intelligence work of the Construction Skills Mission Board (CSMB) via a newly established data working group and will be at UKREiiF from 19-21st May to outline its digital infrastructure capabilities to contractors and local authorities.

Sean Kearns, Group Chief Executive of CSCS, said: “Smart Check has always been about giving the industry confidence that the people on site are who they say they are, and properly skilled and qualified for the work they’re doing. With these enhancements, it becomes something more: a genuine source of national workforce intelligence.

“For the first time, we can show how – at sector level – how and where cards are being checked, and for what purpose. That’s hugely valuable to demonstrate the competence within the workforce and the work of the Construction Skills Mission Board in building a demand-led skills system. If we know the skills and training levels on the ground in each geography, we can help industry, Government and the Public Authorities make informed decisions about where to invest in training and where the real gaps lie.

“This is exactly the kind of evidence-based foundation the industry needs as we move into the next phase of delivering against the Government’s housing and infrastructure ambitions.”
