What to do once you pass your Health, Safety and Environment test

Mar 18, 2026

To apply for a CSCS card you need two things, firstly a recognised qualification, or proof that you are enrolled on a qualification or apprenticeship. Second, a pass in the appropriate CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test relevant to the role you will be carrying out on site or an approved alternative, such as the CIC Health and Safety Course. Please note if you are new to the industry and are applying for a provisional card you only need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) test.

Passing the Health and Safety test does not automatically issue a CSCS card. You will still need to submit an application to CSCS for your card, using the qualification, or evidence or enrolment, and proof of passing your test within the previous two years.

After passing the Health and Safety test you should receive a certificate at the test centre. This certificate includes your Test ID, which is required when applying for a CSCS card. If you have lost the certificate, you can contact the company you took your HSE test with and ask them to re-send or print the score report, or request a duplicate, which may involve a small fee.

Once you have your HS&E test details and your qualification information, download the My CSCS app and begin your application. If you are uploading your qualification certificate, the app’s AI-powered application process will confirm the appropriate CSCS card for you to apply for.

Once your application has been approved you will immediately have access to your digital CSCS card. In most cases this will allow you to access site, although you should check that the site accepts digital cards. The digital card can also be scanned using CSCS Smart Check. Your physical card will then be posted to you and should arrive within 7 – 10 working days.
