Types of Card

There is a range of CSCS cards to cover most occupations in the construction industry. Your current job, your previous experience and any qualifications you have will determine which type of card you should apply for.

Graduate (Technical, Supervisory and Management)

Graduate (Technical, Supervisory and Management)

This card is available if you have completed a nationally recognised construction related qualification with a further/higher education college or university. No Occupations or qualifications are endorsed on the reverse of the Graduate Card. The Graduate Card is valid for three years and can be renewed for three years on application. All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety & Environment Test.
Trainee (Craft and Operative)

Trainee (Craft and Operative)

This card is available if you are a trainee and are registered for an NVQ or SVQ (or if you are registered for or have achieved a Construction Award) but have not yet achieved an NVQ or SVQ. This card is valid for three years. All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test.
Experienced Worker

Experienced Worker

This card is available to workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three). The card is valid for one year and is non-renewable.  It is issued on a temporary basis, while a NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher. An Experienced Worker Card cannot be replaced by a Construction Site Operative or a Basic Skills Green Card. All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment Test.
Experienced Technician, Supervisor or Manager

Experienced Technician, Supervisor or Manager

This card is available to Supervisors and Managers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who do not hold an NVQ or SVQ level 3,4 or 5 and are not a member of an approved Professional Body. The card is valid for three years and is non-renewable.  The card is issued on a temporary basis, while a NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or higher. All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.  For Supervisor occupations you should take the Supervisors test and for Manager occupations you should take the Managers and Professionals test.

This card is available if you can provide evidence of current registration with a further/higher education college or university for a nationally recognised construction related qualification. This card is valid for three years and can be renewed for a further three years on application. All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test.  
Skilled Worker

Skilled Worker

This card is available if you have either: Achieved an NVQ or SVQ level 2 or Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate. This card is valid for five years. If you do not have these qualifications, but you are experienced in your job you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test BLUE CARD – CRAFT UNIT LEVEL This card is for occupations where a full NVQ or SVQ does not exist, but you have passed trade specific units. This card is valid for five years. All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test
Manager

Manager

This card is available for manager occupations subject to: achievement of NVQ/SVQ levels 4, 5, (or QCF Level 6 or 7) in the relevant occupation This card is valid for five years All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.
Site Visitor

Site Visitor

This card is available to people who frequently visit a construction site, but have no construction specific skill. This card is valid for five years. All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test. The issue of this card does not relieve the site managers from their legal obligation to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people entering their sites.  
Advanced Craft/Supervisory

Advanced Craft/Supervisory

This card is available if you have either achieved an NVQ or SVQ level 3 or you have completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.) or completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate. This card is valid for five years. All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.  For Advanced Craft occupations you should take the Operative or the Specialist test depending what your occupation is.  For Supervisory occupations you should take the Supervisors test.
Professionally Qualified Person

Professionally Qualified Person

This card is available to competence assessed members of CSCS approved Professional Bodies This card is valid for five years All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.
Construction Related Occupation (CRO)

Construction Related Occupation (CRO)

This card is available to people working in construction related occupations not covered by the other card categories. This card is valid for five years. All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test.
Construction Site Operative

Construction Site Operative

This card is available to workers who carry out basic site skills only e.g. Labourers. It is available if you have either: NVQ or SVQ level 1 or your employer’s recommendation (industry accreditation).  Your employer must use the industry accreditation competencies, when recommending you. This card is valid for five years All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety & Environment Test.
